Vika’s return to tennis still on hold!

Tennis Talk

Former world number and Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka has had to put her comeback on hold. After withdrawing from Auckland she has announced her withdrawal from the Australian Open with her last appearance on court being almost 6 months ago.

The Belarussian is currently in a custody battle with the father of her son Leo and she has been told that Leo cannot leave California whilst this is being sorted out which means Vika cannot leave California to travel to do her job and play the sport she loves.

It is a sad situation and I do feel for Vika and her family at this tough time having to put her career on hold whilst this is sorted out doesn’t seem fair. She worked so hard since giving birth to get back on tour level fitness so it is a shame for her, her family and the sport who…

Serena withdraws from Australian Open with Indian Wells the likely starting block

Tennis Talk

After her match against Jelena Ostapenko in Abu Dhabi Serena Williams did say her and her team would discuss chances of going to Australia and competing and despite playing a good match the defending Australian Open champion has decided to skip the tournament as she doesn’t feel ready to be competing at that level yet.

Looking at Serena’s schedule from years gone by she usually does take a break after Melbourne and we could next see her at Indian Wells in March however the key for Serena as well will be getting some match practice in so a trip to Qatar or Dubai next month could be on the cards but maybe not as she did decline a wildcard into Sydney next week so match practice might be at the top of her agenda but when she does need match practice the offering of wildcards will not be lacking.

Svitolina puts her name in Melbourne contenders but first she has a job to finish in Brisbane

Tennis Talk

Elina Svitolina had her best year on the tour last year and has carried on her determined fight to 2018 making her first final in Brisbane with wins against Johanna Konta and Karolina Pliskova in the last couple of rounds to secure another final.

Elina’s game is all set to become a major winner. Over the past year we have seen the improvement with her ground strokes and her movement. What I think does let her down at times is concentration and a lack of momentum beginning matches which we saw against Konta in the previous round and that concentration slipped against Pliskova in the semi-final despite some exceptional dominance to get to a 7-5 5-2 position but did get pulled back to 5-5 before sealing the win in straight sets.

There is work to do still in Brisbane as she comes up against a tough opponent who has become…

Serena will be back but a decision on Melbourne awaits!

Tennis Talk

The best sportswomen in the world is on her way back. Not many players in world sport have done what she has done during her career and this wrote a chapter no one expected. The American won the Australian Open whilst pregnant and recently got married now the return is close but when will we see her?

I have nothing but admiration for Serena. What she has done for women’s tennis and women in sport is on another level. She fights, she proves people wrong and at the end of the day she’s the winner.

Serena has been practicing for a while now with a few pictures and videos on social media. She has recently been joined by a new hitting partner in Jarmere Jenkins whose brother is the hitting partner of big sister Venus.

Coach Patrick Mourataglou has said he will be joining Serena in Florida soon but he…
