Venus began the final but it was Garbine Muguruza who got on the scoreboard first and something that was evident early on in the match was the defensive forehand cross court from this year’s Wimbledon finalist.
The forehand cross court took Venus out of the rally on three occasions in the first game with Muguruza forcing an error from her opponent and producing two winners off it to get the early break.
