October 30, 2013 – WTA Tournament of Champions Sofia – WTA Nanjing

wta2013champThe WTA Championships are complete at Istanbul, but the WTA Tournament of Champions is under way at Sofia and the expanded presence the WTA will have on the Asian continent presents itself in the third tournament of the year to be held on Chinese soil, this time at Nanjing.

After an exhilarating final round, Serena istanbultrophyWilliams re-asserted herself as the number one woman’s player on the planet by emerging victorious at the Tournament of Champions in Istanbul. The final match versus China’s Li Na may have seemed like the tide on the tour was changing after Li took the opening set 62, but Serena found the nerve as she has so many times before, settled down and took the next two sets 63 60.

champs2013In the doubles championship, Su-Wei Hsieh of Taipai and Peng Shuai of China beat Ekatarina Makarova and Elena Vesnina of Russia 64 75.

A very entertaining doubles portion of the championships this year in Istanbul may lead the WTA to consider expanding the doubles event to maybe include more pairings next season.

wta2013Congratulations to Serena on another successful season, finishing at the top once again and full appreciation for the outstanding performances from all the players who made it through the long year to qualify and reach the WTA Championships in Istanbul.

sofia2013The WTA Tournament of Champions is underway at Sofia, Bulgaria and we already have a change in the lineup. After Maria Kirilenko’s surprise withdrawal, down 05 in the first set versus France’s Alize Cornet, she will be replaced in the tournament lineup by Ukrainian Elina Svitolina – who will enter into the round-robin portion of the tournament.

simona2A far better start for two-time tournament winner Ana Ivanovic and potential Romanian athlete of the year Simona Halep, who both won their opening round matches of the group stage.

yingyingAnd at WTA Nanjing, the third Chinese WTA tour stop this year, number one seed Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan was upset by Ying-Ying Duan of China 63 62 in the opening round.

yanina2This leaves the tournament wide open for a large range of players who would like to finish the year of with a win, starting with highest remaining seed Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium.

shuaizhang2Also impressive and safely through the first round are Qiang Wang and Shuai Zhang of China and Ayumi Morita of Japan.
