October 30, 2013 – WTA Tournament of Champions Sofia – WTA Nanjing
The WTA Championships are complete at Istanbul, but the WTA Tournament of Champions is under way at Sofia and the expanded presence the WTA will have on the Asian continent presents itself in the third tournament of the year to be held on Chinese soil, this time at Nanjing.
After an exhilarating final round, Serena Williams re-asserted herself as the number one woman’s player on the planet by emerging victorious at the Tournament of Champions in Istanbul. The final match versus China’s Li Na may have seemed like the tide on the tour was changing after Li took the opening set 62, but Serena found the nerve as she has so many times before, settled down and took the next two sets 63 60.
A very entertaining doubles portion of the championships this year in Istanbul may lead the WTA to consider expanding the doubles event to maybe include more pairings next season.
Congratulations to Serena on another successful season, finishing at the top once again and full appreciation for the outstanding performances from all the players who made it through the long year to qualify and reach the WTA Championships in Istanbul.
The WTA Tournament of Champions is underway at Sofia, Bulgaria and we already have a change in the lineup. After Maria Kirilenko’s surprise withdrawal, down 05 in the first set versus France’s Alize Cornet, she will be replaced in the tournament lineup by Ukrainian Elina Svitolina – who will enter into the round-robin portion of the tournament.
